Bottrill takes victory in round one of National time trial series despite suffering a front wheel blow out!

Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) was in fine form at the weekend taking victory in the first round of the National time trial series, held in Fincingfield in Essex, promoted by Chelmer CC.

The country’s finest riders competed over a distance of 25.5 miles through undulating lanes. The circuit was very technical and rolling with the hardest section coming in the last mile, back into the village of Fincingfield. To make the ride even harder, the riders would be timed for the final section!

The riders awaited their start times, but as the marshals and time keepers took their places, the freezing cold conditions, gave way to a heavy rain storm, which the early starters would have to brace.

The seeded riders however would get the better of the conditions, with the rain stopping. The first rider to set a high standard was Brett Harwood, (Terry Wright Cycles RC), 59:53. This was then battered down by inform Edmund Bradbury (Cambridge University RT) and the youngster did a tremendous time of 58:05.

This just left two riders out on the course James Ratcliffe (Fred Williams Cycles RC) and Multi National time trial Champion Matthew Bottrill.

It was clear from the start that Bottrill was flying, hitting speeds ranging from 28 – 36mph, and covering the first 10 miles in just under 21 minutes. With the hardest section coming in the last 5 miles, Bottrill had his 4 minute man in his sight, but then disaster struck as Bottrill suffered a front wheel blow out!

Luckily after just under half a mile, Bottrill managed to get a front wheel replacement from a marshal Earon Field- Chelmer CC. A quick change was needed, but with a bit of team work, Bottrill, was soon back on his bike and flying back down the course, producing some great power numbers!

With the final climb in his sights Bottrill, buried himself and was back on the heals of Ratcliffe. With a final lunge for the line, he crossed the line with a new hill climb record of 2.21 and over two minutes to spare over the competition. A truly awesome performance!

An exhausted Bottrill said afterwards “That was one hard days racing; technical, demanding and wet. The puncture came just at the right time, I can’t thank Earon Field enough for loaning me his wheel, he’s a top bloke, and I hope he has great success with his own racing.”

“I knew at the time of puncturing I was on a good ride, so did not panic. If anything, the rest did me good. I was flying down that last five miles. So all in all it turned out to be a good day.”
