National Trophy: Finale at Shrewsbury

The leaders in the National Trophy cyclo-cross will be converging on the picturesque town of Shrewsbury for the final round of the series in the final showdown before the British Championships the week after in Derby.

Organiser Dave Mellor will be looking for similar coloured skies on Sunday … bright blue!

The event, organised by Dave Mellor who has bike shops in the town, is a regular at this newish venue and with all the rain recently, the going is expected to be tough!

The day will begin with the Veterans where the top three in the series are all entered with both Ian Taylor and Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) looking for a way to beat the dominant rider in the series, Darren Atkins. Many of the leading Over 50’s are at the World Masters so a new winner for a round in this category will be keenly contested.

In the Women’s event, series leader and local, Hannah Payton will be the big favourite but we have already seen the power of Spain’s Merce Pacios Pujadó and another close race is expected. Annie Simpson too will be in the mix as will top Junior, RST Racing’s Abby-Mae Parkinson. The entry also includes an icon from Downhill racing, Tracy Moseley.

 

In the Junior race, held at the same time on the day, Series Leader Sean Dunlea has a 25 point leader over local Daniel Fox of the RST Racing team but victory in the race could go a number of ways with the likes of Dylan Kerfoot-Robson on his Raleigh cross bike also a big threat as will be Nick Craig’s youngster, Thomas.

In the Youth categories, Daniel Tulett of Hargroves Cycles is expected to again take maximum points on his way to a series victory while the battle between Charlotte Broughton and Jessica Roberts (RST Racing Team) will again be an exciting one to watch. In the Under 14’s, Series leaders Craig Rogers and Lucy Horrocks will look to seal series wins but one thing is for sure, the local youth riders from Mid Shropshire Wheelers will be going in doing their best to bring a home victory to the promoting club.

The final event of the day is the Senior/Under 23 race where Paul Oldham will do his best to end the series win with a victory but you can tell the British Champs is around the corner with lots of other names expected to provide a big challenge. There’s no Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) as far as we know but challengers to Oldham will include Beckingsale if he’s recovered from a very heavy fall, former British Champions Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) and Ian Bibby (Madison Genesis), Tom Van Den Bosch (Hargroves Cycles), Nick Craig and David Fletcher.

Ewan Grivell-Mellor will be racing for the promoting club Mid Shropshire Wheelers which has loads of local support from business and fans.

More threats will come from the Under 23 riders such as series leader Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) who was second in Milton Keynes, top Mountain Bikers Grant Ferguson & Kenta Gallagher along with Ben Sumner and Adam Martin. Another threat may come from Yorben Van Tichelt of Sunweb-Revor.
