Matt Bottrill’s PB for the 25 sees him race to a 46:10 (course record) in the Derby Mercury 25 mile time trial on Saturday
Fourth fastest 25 ever for Bottrill
Just one week after setting a new personal best in last weekends BDCA 50 mile time trial, Matthew Bottril (www.drag2zero.com) was in fine form over the weekend. Riding in the Derby Mercury 25 mile time trial, based at Etwall, Derbyshire, Bottrill smashed his own personal best and breaking the course record of time trial legend Michael Hutchinson to set the fourth fastest 25 mile time trial ever recorded by an individual in the UK.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, a selection of the UK’s finest time trialists, set about tackling the Etwal 25 mile time trial. The outward leg to Uttoxeter was into a head wind, but with the warm dry air, the speed on the course was quick.
With the fastest section on the return leg, there would be a number of personal best times set from the 120 riders taking part. The standard was set with Brett Harwood (Terry Wright Cycles) recording a time of 50:53 and this was then lowered with the first 30mph ride by Lee Tunniciffe (High Wycombe CC) 49:26.
Then the battle for a place on the podium was taken by Andy Jackson (Team Swift) 49:11, and just a few moments later, Jason Bouttell (Team Velovelocity) lowered this to 49:10.
Mean while out on the course and on a high from last weekends BDCA 50 , Matthew Bottrill was setting about his ride and the news was that he was flying! Bottrill hit the half way point in 25:23 for the 13 mile opening leg. With the fast section still to come, Bottrill was up to speeds off 42mph and averaged 34.9mph for the finish. Stopping the clock in an incredible time of 46:10 for a new PB and course record.
Asked about his winning performance Bottrill replied “I’m well happy with today’s performance. My coach Bob Tobin, (cyclepowermeters.com) worked out that setting a new course record would be possible after last weeks ride. We just needed the weather to play ball, which luckily it did! To have taken 28 seconds off Michael Hutchinson’s course record is just something else. I know, providing my form improves a little, the competition record of 45.46, also held by Hutchinson, is within reach.” Everything just need’s to run perfect”
