Iona Sewell & Richard Sharp winners at round 6 of the Yorksport Partnership Criteriums on August 6th in York
Youngsters lead the way. .. (thanks Richard Mellen)
Race six at the York Sport Village begun under glorious evening sunshine with low flying hot-air balloons drifting overhead. From the whistle, the racing was fast and soon the 20 starters were strung out. There were a few little attacks on the front until a sustained effort on lap five from Richard Sharp of local club Clifton CC stuck.
Within a lap, Dirtwheels junior Will Stavely bridged the gap and then there were two. Both riders seemed determined that this break was going to work and the soon had 25 seconds on the peloton. Simon West of Cyclesense tried to organise a chase back but every time he peeled off the front, the Dirtwheels boys were second in line disrupting the chase.
A classy tactic which was met by derision from the growing crowd of spectators. This continued throughout the race with attacks from a still sore Richard Baldwin (Bikebox) and Ged Millward (Ilkley CC) but to no avail. It wasn’t until Under 16 rider Alex Littlewood struck out three from home and soon had over 10 seconds on the bunch. The leaders were never in any danger having increased their lead to 47 seconds by the bell lap.
With a fierce red sunset and floodlights blazing. The leaders crossed the line with Richard Sharp only just getting the better of Will Stavely on his junior gearing in an incredible sprint for the line. An exhausted Alex Littlewood got a very well deserved third. Even if he did almost get caught by a furiously chasing bunch when he eased up a little too soon. Another brilliant night of racing which all the riders thoroughly seemed to enjoy.
