Garmin’s Andrew Talansky won stage 3 of Paris-Nice after making it into select group on the final climbs of the wet and windy stage to Brioude
A new name in American cycling emerged in Paris-Nice as Andrew Talansky showed what talent he has in his legs when he surged clear of his rivals to win the third stage of Paris-Nice into Brioude and take the leader’s jersey in the Race to the Sun.
It was actually a race in the rain on the 170.5 kilometres from Chatel-Guyon and the Miami-born Talansky displayed his all-round skills to outsprint a group of seven escapees who held the peloton at bay over the final ten kilometers.
The final second category climb was decisive but it was on the descent when the break took shape and a drag race between them and the much slimmed down chasing peloton behind.
Gang of four
The start in the rain saw 176 riders line up with Ivan Guttierez (MOV) not starting. Four riders broke clear after three kilometres; Martijn Keizer (VCD), Sébastien Minard (ALM) , Mads Christensen (TST) who had already been in a break on stage 2, and Alexis Vuillermoz (SOJ). The break rapidly gained momentum and their lead remained stable at around four minutes. Christensen won the first intermediate sprint of the day (Km 34) ahead of Vuillermoz and Keizer.
The Vacansoleil rider had obviously gone in the break to keep the polka-dot jersey in the team. He was first on top of the Col de Potey (km 85) and Cote de la Foret de la Comte (km 95.5), both times ahead of Vuillermoz. While the Cannondale team-mates of Elia Viviani led the chase, they were joined by Tom Boonen (OPQ), who spent many miles in the lead, gearing up for the upcoming classics. As a result, the four were caught by the peloton at kilometre 148, before reaching the last climb of the day.
It was here that Team Sky raised the tempo on the Cote de Mauvagnat which was too fast for leader and sprinter Viviani, who lost ground with 18 kms to go. On the descent Andriy Grivko (AST) attacked with Vasili Kiriyenka (SKY), who crashed, but was still joined by two other Team Sky riders, Richie Porte and David Lopez Garcia, local favorite Romain Bardet (ALM), David Malacarne (EUC), Gorka Izaguirre (EUS) and Andrew Talansky (GRS).
The seven worked perfectly together and managed to hold a chasing bunch of 22 at bay until the finish line. While the Sky riders had done a great share of the work, they paid for it in the finale and there was no stopping Talansky when he surged to snatch his major win to date.
Among the big names to lose vital time today were Robert Gesink (BLA), who lost a minute, Simon Gerrans (OGE), who finished 2:58 behind, or Thomas de Gendt (VCD), who lost 5:29.
Reactions
Afterwards Talansky said it was possible to win the race. “This is really important for me and for the team because Garmin Sharp sent a whole team here to help me for the overall. So to win a stage here and in the end the jersey, I think it’s a big step for me in my own career. I think it’s pretty logical, you get better every year. It’s a matter of time really for me to win.”
Talking us through the decent he explained “I took the fifth wheel behind the Sky train. It’s not so much that it was crazy, it just takes one guy to crash or get scared and there’s a gap. There was a gap and I was with Richie Porte and David Lopez Garcia and Sky rode for the overall too. David Lopez rode five out of ten kilometres in the lead. When I realised we were going to go all the way, I tried to figure out a way to win this. I have a good sprint out of a small group”.
“That winning feeling is why I love this sport. There’s no thinking. You dedicate yourself so much to the sport. It’s not about winning, it’s about a reward for all that hard work. It’s a combination of what you dedicate your entire life to the sport. And this is just a start. So…”
“We have the jersey and it’s nice to be in the jersey. It’s always easier to defend something than to fight to get it. There’s still a lot of good riders. There’s Richie, there’s Tejay, there’s Westra, everyone. We will do what we can to keep it. Montagne de Lure is a really good climb for me. It’s really up to me. The final time trial on Col d’Eze is another good one for me. Especially Col d’Eze. I think it’s possible for me. I watched Col d’Eze on videos. I think it’s perfect for me.”
