Report: Colin Ash wins Tyneside Vagabonds NECCL Event

On Sunday 6 January 2013, Tyneside Vagabonds Cycling Club hosted Round 8 of the North East Cyclo-Cross League (NECCL) run under the rules and regulations of TLI Cycling.

The event is one of only a few held so far at Thorneyford Farm, Kirkley, near Ponteland. Farmer, Tim Irwin, recently set up Kirkley Cycles, and both he and the event organisers, are keen to see events continue and develop on the site. Tyneside Vagabonds have already hosted Cyclocross North East (CXNE) and go-cross events at the venue.

There were over 70 competitors, with races for all ages, and catering and prizes, to make sure all the family had a good day out. Recent wet weather made for a precarious course and some exciting riding, with the course prepared using the most solid under-tyre terrain available on the day and included some severely slippy off-camber sections.

In the main race, for seniors, veterans, and juniors, Colin Ash riding for Blackhawkbikes.com came out on top. After taking the lead mid-way through the first lap he extended his lead during the race to finish a comfortable winner. The Teesside-based Blackhawkbikes.com team had turned out in force, and it was Alan Nixon from the team who took 2nd place despite a puncture and bike swap mid-way through. Ian Gibson of Gosforth-based M Steel Cycles racing team took 3rd, not far behind Nixon. James Anderson (Blackhawkbikes.com) took the Veterans prize, Kevin Dowson (Hetton Hawks CC) was first Vet over 50 and John Carr (Cleveland Wheelers) was first vet over 60. Kyle Watts of the promoting club (Tyneside Vagabonds CC) was first Junior.

There were two other races on the day – Joe Mann (Derwentside CC) was best of the Under 16’s while Ben Dowson (Hetton Hawks) was first Under 12 on a shortened version of the course.
