The 2012/13 National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Season came to a close today with the Onimpex-Bioracer Derby round of the series, the sixth for the season.
The final race of the afternoon saw a great three-way battle between British Champion Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles), series leader Oli Beckinsgale (Endura) and Belgian Joeri Hofman. The race began with a high speed crash in the middle of the field as Rob Jebb came to grief and after he dragged himself off the tarmac, he was in last place chasing the race.

One of the riders of the series, Paul Oldham, defending title holder, was struggling with his shoulder which he dislocated last week in a cross race at Macclesfield. Everyone had hoped to see Oldham and Beckingsale battle hard for the series with only two points between them but alas for Oldham, his shoulder gave him far too much trouble for him to mount a challenge.
Instead it was Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) who was also recovering from a dislocated shoulder five weeks ago, who managed to pull something out of the bag after very little racing and training post shoulder injury. Beckingsale and Field were the two riders who dragged themselves clear of the rest and then Hofman hopped on the back to watch the battle between Field and Beckingsale.
Hofman then started to put in a few little digs and drew clear and as Beckingsale closed in, the Belgian pulled out his party trick by showing some balls by bunny hopping the slippery hurdles and pulling clear of Beckingsale who then fell and lost more time.
While Under 23 rider Hofman continued hold the gap, Field caught Beckingsale and they fought all the way to the line with Field getting second and showing that he’s in good shape to defend his title in Bradford next weekend. Paul Oldham meanwhile, normally at the head of affairs, lost over six minutes giving the series to Beckingsale who pointed out that Endura riders have won the Premier Calendar, the Mountain Bike and now the Cyclo-Cross national series overalls in three different disciplines.
Another National Trophy win for Belgian Joeri Hofman winning the Elite Men’s race.

Steven James (Hargroves Cycles), the Under 23 British Cyclo-Cross Champion, got off quickest yet again at the start leading Hargroves Cycles teammates Jody Crawforth and Ian Field away
Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) won the Under 23 National Trophy ahead of Adam Martin who had a day to forget and Ben Sumner.

L-R: Paul Oldham (Hope FR), Oli Beckingsale  (Endura) and Steven James  (Hargroves Cycles), the top three in the 2012/13 National Trophy.
The three leaders: Ian Field  (Hargroves Cycles), Joeri Hofman and Oli Beckingsale  (Endura) slog their way through a very muddy section of the course.
Ian Field (Hargrove Cycles) wins the first battle against Oli Beckingsale  (Endura) but who will win the war for the stripy jumper…Â
Women’s Race
Louise Robinson has dominated this series showing that age is no barrier to winning when you have as much class as she does and she did win the overall today in Derby. But, it was local lass Annie Last, mixing her university studies in medicine and racing at the highest level, who managed to do what no-one else has done this year and that is beat Louise.
Big battle for the women’s race between Louise Robinson and Annie Last.
Annie set the pace from the start only for Louise to catch her and the duo battled hard for the lead until a mistake by Last caught Robinson out and it was Last that benefited. From that moment, Robinson was unable to close the gap with Last going on to win from Robinson with Bethany Crumpton in third.
In the Junior Men’s race, it was Billy Harding (below), perhaps coming into the best form possible a week before the British Championships in his local event, who dominated the race. He led from start to finish whilst the battle for the minor placings was eventually won by Trophy Series winner Jack Ravenscroft who won his battle with Cardiff rider Adam King.
First win for her new sponsor, Annie Last triumphs in her home round of Derby.
The overall went to Louise Robinson from Adela Carter and Delia Beddis
Podium for the race in Derby with L-R: Louise Robinson, Annie Last, Bethany Crumpton and first junior Alice Barnes.
Junior Podium for the race, L-R: Jack Ravenscroft, Billy Harding and Adam King.
Start of the Junior Men’s race.
The Youths Boys Under 16 race saw Tomas Franklin (Hargroves Cycles) solo to a great win after holding off the hard charging David Barnes who brought Franklin’s lead back to only 10 seconds at the finish with local rider Will Gascoyne in third. Franklin won the series.
The Under 16 Girls race saw a red hot battle between Charlotte Broughton and series leader Abby-Mae Parkinson of RST Clothing/Trigon Bikes. Throw in the challenge from another of RST Clothing/Trigon Bikes rider into the mix (Grace Garner) and this race was one of the most exciting.
And it stayed that way all the way to the line when Broughton came back at Parkinson on the last lap to set up a thrilling sprint for the line which she won to win the race. Parkinson though won the series and the British championship looks like being a fantastic race.
The Under 14 boys saw Dan Tulett (Hargroves Cycles) continue to ride away from the rest and the only battle he had faced during the whole race was the one off the line as he raced side by side down the starting funnel with another rider who soon slipped back. Tulett’s win was his sixth in the six rounds and the trophy title was his by a huge margin. The Under 14 girls race meanwhile was won by series leader and eventual winner, Jessica Roberts (Towys) .
Under 16 Girls Podium: Abby-Mae Parkinson (RST Clothing/Trigon Bikes), Charlotte Broughton and Amira Mellor.

Tom Franklin of Hargroves Cycles wins the Under 16 boys race wearing the leader’s jersey.
In the Veterans 40-49, there was a long tussle between Darren Atkins and Ian Taylor with little between them as they both tried to break free of the other. In the end it was the rider in yellow, Atkins who managed to do just that and he rode off to win by over a minute while in the over 50’s it was as expected, a Steve Davies (Hargroves Cycles) whitewash again as he continued to race away from his rivals and win by over a minute from Dave McMullen (Cotswold Velderijen) with Pete Harris in third.
Sponsor Ken Jones (Onimpex/Bioracer) presents Pete Harris with some beer…

It was a foggy start to the Over 40’s race at 10.30 in the morning.
