THE OVERALL STANDINGS

The favourites in the National Cyclo-Cross Trophy continued to dominate the series as the racing travelled to the North East and South Sheild’s Temple Park.

An exciting Men’s race was won by Under 23 rider Floris De Tier as he found the legs to see off the challenge of fellow Belgian Bart Hoffman and Endura’s Oli Beckingsale. With the sun shine helping to melt the course a little during the day despite freezing temperatures, it was appropriately enough the Yellow jersey of Paul Oldham (Hope) who led the way at the start with Steve James (Hargroves Cycles). There was bad luck for James though as he crashed and despite trying to carry on, the knee injury was too bad and he had to retire.

The race was then taken over by the Belgian’s De Tier and Hoffman battling with the Brit Oldham ahead of a group of the strongest challengers including Beckingsale. It was the Endura rider who managed to bridge to the front though to make four riders gunning for the win on the final lap. No-one was going to deny De Tier however and he crossed the line three seconds clear of his Belgian rival Hoffman with Beckingsale alongside trying to grab some more series points ahead of Oldham who retained the series lead.

First Brit, Oli Beckingsale admitted he had decent legs but an awful start saw him throw the race away and in the end had to be happy with the podium. “I’m a bit rusty with cross” Oli said to Andy Whitehouse (BC) “so I was losing time on the dismount and losing time on the bike change. But I’m enjoying it and improving and by the time we get to January, I will be faster again.”

Louise Robinson wins the Women’s Event

In the Women’s event, it was over whelming series leader Louise Robinson who again led the way winning again but there was a different challenger with Scotland’s Elieen Roe denying Adela Carter second place by just two seconds at the finish. Afterwards Robinson explained frozen ruts are not her favourite on a course after a fall in the World Championships a few years ago but then worryingly for her opponents, admitted to a slight injury which has hampered her training the last few weeks.

The Junior race saw Jack Ravenscroft back on the winners podium after his victory in Ipswich in round 2. The Solihull rider who has a ‘home tie’ at Shrewsbury next week, didn’t wait for this rivals to take the race to him as he leapt away from the start and was never caught.

The battle for the minor placings came down to a race between Michael Thompson and Adam King with other favourites such as Jake Womersley, Harry Franklin (Hargroves Cycles), Billy Harding and Matt Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) not far away showing what strength in depth there is in the Junior category.

In the Youth races, there was a double for Hargroves Cycles when Tom Franklin (under 16) and Dan Tullet (under 14) won their events. It was a hard fought win for Franklin with a whole group of riders only seconds behind sprinting for the line. Arthur Green was second and David Barnes third. Dan Tullett meanwhile continued to dominate the Under 14 boys category.

In the Girls event, Abby-Mae Parkinson continues her winning streak in yet another 1-2 with her talented teammate Grace Garner, both riding for RST Clothing-Trigon Bikes. Third was Amira Mellor. In the Under 14, it was another win for Jessica Roberts who continues to lead the series.

In the Veterans, Darren Atkins won his third event in the series to increase his lead. Riding from the front, Atkins rode away from his rivals but with his lead so narrow over rival Ian Taylor, there was no room to take a moments rest and he pressed on right the way to the line with Taylor only ten seconds behind with Chris Rathbone in third. The Over 50’s was again a win for Steve Davies over his nearest rival in the series, Phil Roach. Third was Mick Davies.
