Day 4 of the British Track Championships saw titles for Rachel & Becky James, Janet Birkmyre, Callum Skinner, GB Academy and Grace Garner/Abby-Mae Parkinson and Ben Chapman/Max Stedman

Report from Anna Flanders – A round up of the headlines from day four of the British Cycling National Track Championships at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester
Callum Skinner showed that the future of British sprinting is in safe hands after a stunning performance in the Sprint saw him take the national Sprint title in front of a delighted Manchester Velodrome crowd. The competition came to a dramatic climax after Lewis Oliva looked to have sealed up the title 2-0, only to be relegated for coming out of the sprinter’s line in the second head-to-head. This took the title to a decider which Skinner won by a tiny margin on the line.
Such is the depth of British sprinting, the young crop of talented British riders produced an enthralling and close competition in which Oliva saw off British Cycling Olympic Podium Programme athlete Matt Crampton in the semi final and Skinner defeated last year’s silver medallist David Daniell on his way to the final. Skinner and Oliva are two names to remember as Britain’s young cyclists set off on the road to Rio 2016.
Crampton had to settle for bronze, defeating David Daniell in the bronze medal ride off to add to the Keirin gold he won on Friday night. Racing for Abergavenny RC, Great Britain cyclist Becky James and older sister Rachel stormed to victory in the Team Sprint in a time of 34.424, securing Becky’s third title of the week. The 20 year old Welsh sprinter added yet another gold to her growing collection of medals, demonstrating her prodigious talent once more. The Edinburgh Road Club pairing of Eleanor Richardson and Lauryn Therin took silver in a time of 36.182.
James will look to complete the perfect week when she defends her Keirin title on Sunday, the final day of competition. The Team Pursuit title went to the 100% ME team who caught their opponents Champion System in the final. The Great Britain Academy quartet of Owain Doull, Sam Harrison, Alistair Slater and Simon Yates went into the evening’s finals session as favourites after a convincing performance in the heats saw them qualify fastest. The Hargroves Cycles team of Jon Dibben, Sam Lowe, Luc Hall and Andrew Hargroves caught the Prestige VC team to take the bronze medal.
The women’s scratch race took a surprise twist when veteran rider Janet Birkmyre of Torq Performance produced a stunning sprint to take gold in a field where most of the favourites were over 25 years her junior. Birkmyre’s dash for the line left the likes of double Junior Road Race World Champion Lucy Garner, former National Circuit Race Champion Hannah Barnes and newly crowned National Points Champion Corrine Hall as distant figures in the bunch. Lisa Daly (Sport City Velo) and Kayleigh Brogan (Team Ibis Cycles) took silver and bronze respectively.
Ben Chapman and Max Stedman are the new U16 Male Madison champions after a nail-biting finish which saw the gold medal rest on the final sprint. Chapman and Stedman took the final sprint to secure the win just 1 point ahead of Tristan Robbins and Charlie Tanfield who collected silver and 3 points ahead of Fabio Close and James Shaw who took home bronze.
The first title of the day was won in the Female U16 Madison and went to Grace Garner and Abby-Mae Parkinson. Garner and Parkinson put together a perfect ride; the pairing winning all four sprints in the 80 lap event. Silver went to the pairing of Paige Milward (Lyme RC) and Lauren O’Brien (RST RT) in a tight scrap with Megan Barker (Cardiff Ajax CC) and Kimberley English (Welwyn Wheelers CC).
