BMC’s man from the Wirral, Steve Cummings, has won stage 13 of the Tour of Spain after attacking the break with over 3k to go.

One of Britain’s most under rated roadman who has had some pretty bad luck this year with crashes, Steve Cummings (BMC), won the 13th stage of the Tour of Spain with some aggressive riding. Cummings, the only rider to finish second twice in the Tour of Britain, the last time in 2011, attacked the break he was in with over three kilometres to go and held on to win by four seconds from Australian Cameron Meyer and Antonio Flecha.

On a stage which saw a lot of early breaks going clear, including a big one with Ian Stannard, 45 kilometres were covered in the first an hour before the pace slowed and the winning break quickly gained time. In the move were Britain’s Steve Cummings, Italian Omnium rider and roadman, Elia Viviani, Simon Clarke and Cameron Meyer of Australia, Linus Gerdemann, Juan Flecha and a rider well known for his Tour of Britain breaks, Thomas de Gendt.
Unsurprisingly, the peloton was controlled by the team of John Degenkolb, Argos Shimano, who were no doubt hoping the German would add to his four stage wins and they, with the help of other teams, controlled the break’s lead which was never very big at just over three minutes.
With still 50 kilometres to go, the break only had two minutes and it was a full on drag race between the riders in the break and the sprinter teams. Despite mechanicals for De Gendt and Gerdemann, the break was holding on to their lead but with 20 kilometres to go, that lead was down to under a minute.
It was nail biting stuff but still the break were not giving in and while the gap continued to come down, the break had moments when they managed to take the lead back out again as the peloton’s chase became disorganised. With the break in sight, attacks started to come from the peloton and they were also getting restless in the break with Flecha and De Gendt having a dig.

Flecha and his former teammate at Sky Steve Cummings then joined up off the front only for the rest of the break to come back up to them. Â Cummings then went solo chased by Meyer and Flecha. The BMC rider who has been a pro for many years and come so close to winning the Tour of Britain on two occasions, dug deep and just managed to hold on for his biggest win this year and a deserved one too.
Overcoming Adversity
Prior to Friday, Cummings’ best result of the season was a 15th place on Stage 7 of the Tour de Suisse. It was his first victory since winning Stage 3 of the Volta ao Algarve on Feb. 18, 2011. The 2011 Tour of Britain runner-up has faced his share of adversity this year, enduring an injury-plagued season that includes a broken left wrist at Vuelta al Pais Vasco, a broken pelvis at Volta ao Algarve and an injured left wrist at the Amgen Tour of California.
His win adds to those this month by teammates Gilbert (Vuelta a España, Stage 9), Taylor Phinney (USA Pro Challenge, Stage 7), Tejay van Garderen (USA Pro Challenge, Stage 2), Alessandro Ballan (Eneco Tour of Benelux, Stage 7), Johann Tschopp (Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah overall and Stage 5) and Adam Blythe (Paris-Corrèze, Stage 1).
He told Eurosport “It’s been a difficult year but this is the best win of my career.” “There is a lot of emotion [with this win[, happy, relieved and just glad because it’s nice to do something for the team because they have been so supportive as have all my family. This is a good moment for everyone.”
On how the gap to the chasers went back out, Steve explain “We had seven riding and maybe they were chasing with eight guys but I can’t imagine they were all riding so we had a good chance and we knew with the wind, there was going to be a big fight. The wind (head) was what kept the gap from going out bigger because of the stress in the peloton, surging forward for sections, and I knew all we could do was give it everything.”
After watching Flecha attack, Stevo recalls what happened next… “it was a headwind and I was going to go myself but in those situations, seven or eight k is a long way to go on your own! So I tried to wait as long as possible and I wasn’t going to let De Gendt or Flecha ride away but I tried to ride off Greenedge a bit because they had two riders.”
“I think I played it really well and waited for a good opportunity”.
“With a K to go, I could see they ([chasers] had sat up and knew I’d won so that was nice, I could enjoy it a bit more but until then it was head down and go as hard as I could!”

Other quotes:
Race leader Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodriguez (Katusha): “It’s been a hard stage again, at least until km 50 when the breakaway went. There were very strong riders up the road. Argos-Shimano rode all day behind. When there was this attack of Kashechkin and Steegmans, I told Dani Moreno to go. The idea was to split the bunch.”
“To be considered the favourite of the Vuelta by riders [like Chris Froome] or ex-riders [like Oscar Pereiro] isn’t a weight on my shoulders. Tomorrow, everything can change. It can be in my favour or in somebody else’s favour. The truth is I’m feeling very good on the climbs and the time trial is behind us. But only if I’m still leading the Vuelta after the second rest day, I’ll start thinking of putting myself in the role of the favourite.â€
Chris Froome (Sky): “Today was a flatter stage but we have three days of high mountains coming up. After the brutal effort of yesterday up to the Mirador, my legs were ok but I felt tired. I guess everyone feels tired. I hope that everyone feels tired! I don’t have any enemies and the Vuelta is not only a race of Spaniards against me. Rodriguez has let everyone know that he’s got a fantastic condition and that he’s the strongest. It’s going to be difficult to beat him.â€
Cameron Meyer (Orica-GreenEdge): “We tried to win. We did well, but Stephen Cummings had a lot of power and I couldn’t close the small gap he got for himself. I’m a bit upset. There are now many stages in which I’ve made the breakaway without winning. The positive aspect is that I have the best condition I’ve ever had in a Grand Tour.â€
John Degenkolb (Argos-Shimano, 7th): “What to say? My team has once again done a great job but I’m disappointed by the result. Lotto-Belisol came and helped us but it wasn’t enough considering the quality of the rouleurs present in the breakaway. I’m even more disappointed because I haven’t taken the green jersey back.â€
