Aussie, Aussie, Aussie  - Australian Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge) outsprinted Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) in the ski resort of Valdezcaray to win a drama filled day in the 2012 Tour of Spain.

World time trial champion Martin and eventual race winner Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEDGE) rode clear of the five up break they had been part of which escaped just a few kilometers into the race. With the peloton happy to let them go, they built up more than 13 minutes of a gap at one point.

Martin and Clarke then attacked just kilometres into the 13.4km Category 1 climb Estacion de Valedzcaray, which averaged 5.2% with a maximum gradient of 9 percent. While the gap was reduced to just minutes in the final kilometres by the GC contenders, the gap was more than enough for the two riders to focus on beating each other to the line for the stage win.
Simon Clarke afterwards said “I had always had a bit of a circle around this stage. Yesterday was a hard day and it presented a chance to lose some time and move off the general classification, so I did that intentionally. I thought Movistar might allow the breakaway to go today as long as no one in the move was a threat to the race leader.â€
“Although we had such a huge gap, I never thought it was assured that we would stay away,†admitted Clarke. “There was so much wind, and I know what can happen in these conditions. When the field gets going, they can easily sit on 60 kilometers/hour, and the break can be caught out going more slowly. Even with 13 minutes, I wasn’t convinced that we were going to stay away.â€
“I was getting a bit of information while I was in the break,†explained Clarke. “I didn’t know about the crash, but I did know the Sky had attacked in the wind and the pace had picked up. I started to get nervous about that. Being out front for so long, it’s not easy to decide to suddenly go ten kilometers/hour faster. We sat out there and kept doing what we had been doing, hoping we would have enough time for the finish.â€
“Luckily, Tony was feeling strong, and we were able to work well together until we reached the top,†said Clarke. “I really backed myself in the sprint finish. I was confident I could beat Tony in a sprint, so I had to be careful that he didn’t attack me in a moment of lost concentration in the closing kilometers. At the same time, I was a bit worried about Bazayev, who was only about 20 seconds behind us. I knew he wasn’t far off our pace, and he’s a fast finisher. I didn’t want to go to the line with him.â€
“I wanted Tony to lead out the sprint, and I knew I needed to wait long enough to come around him,†explained Clarke. “With a hilltop finish, you don’t have a 400 meter sprint left in your legs, so it’s important to wait. In the end, Tony was the one to go too early. I followed him and waited. I made sure I saw the 200 meter sign before I started my sprint. From there, I went for it and it worked out.â€
“I have been a professional for four years, and this is only my first professional win,†Clarke said. “It’s been a long time coming, and I never imagined it would come in such a big way for me and the team. I couldn’t be any happier.”
Tony Martin:Â “I was motivated to go into the breakaway,” Martin said. “All the team was in the front in the first kilometres. I took the first attack and we went immediately. The pace in the breakaway was really good, we collaborated very well. On the last climb I didn’t have the energy to make the difference, especially because of the heat.”
“It was another incredibly hot day. I tried to leave him to take the lead but he stayed with me. I launched the sprint but I knew he was faster than me. I’m happy about my race. Today was really hot and wasn’t so easy to stay in the front with only five guys. My condition is improving. I trained good before coming here and I’m really looking forward to the time trial next week and — why not — to try to grab a stage victory in one of the next stages.”
Drama filled stage
In the battle for the GC, there was plenty of drama and at the end of the stage, Chris Froome moved up to second place. Joaquim RodrÃguez (Katusha) meanwhile took the leader’s jersey from Alejandro Valverde who was involved in a crash when Team Sky attacked into the cross winds. In the scramble for wheels, there was a fall only a few riders back from the front of the race.
The fall out from Juan Antonio Flecha putting the hammer down on the front though will rumble on for a long time in the race with Team Sky, and others, making enemies by continuing to go full gas when the race leader was down on the floor.
There is no doubt the attacking by Sky came before the crash to the race leader but the unwritten rule of waiting for the race leader was ignored not just by Sky but by BMC and Katusha. As Roger Hammond explained later though, during his career, the unwritten rules have gone from being black and white and enforced by the peloton patrons to being ‘diluted’ and becoming grey areas where riders are uncertain what to do.
There was after all a break up the road that had to be caught and the fact they never were caught showed that the race never really went full gas for the whole distance.
There was though some juicy GC action at the front of the peloton on the final climb. At one stage on the final climb, Saxobank with Contador and a teammate went on the attack and Froome was again equal to it as was Nicholas Roche from Ireland.
The latter carried on the move while Froome and co went back into what was left of the peloton. While the chasing group including Roche stayed clear to gain a few seconds on Froome and co, the seconds (9) gained were insignificant. More serious was the time loss by Valverde. He closed the gap to Froome and co from over a minute to a few seconds at one point before blowing in the heat and finishing 55 seconds back from the Froome group.
The Spanish rider had no hesitation to take his anger to the Sky bus and try and get answers as to why the team ‘rode’ when he was on the deck. Froome said he wasn’t aware that the race leader was on the ground at that point and when they did ease back, other teams took up the chase of the break.
Reaction from Team Sky
After the stage, Team Sky Sports Director Marcus Ljungqvist defended the team’s decision not to wait after Valverde had fallen, and insisted there was no malice whatsoever in their judgement. He said: “We haven’t seen a replay of the crash yet but let’s be clear, we are not the type of team who would ever try to benefit from some else’s misfortune, and there is always two sides to the story.”
“It was clear that the peloton was nervous because of the crosswinds, and it was only a matter of time before one team hit the front. We took that responsibility because it was vital Froomey was well positioned, and then unfortunately the crash came soon after that. There’s always a lot of confusion straight after a fall and it takes time to know who’s been affected, and who’s been held up behind. Before we knew Valverde was down we were already 50 seconds in front and we had to keep chasing the break before the last climb of the day.”
“It’s really unfortunate that it was the race leader who was caught up, but we didn’t have any choice but to keep going by the time we found out because there were other teams riding hard as well. As for Froomey, he showed he was really strong again and that was good to see. That last climb was the toughest of the tour, but he handled himself really well and is in a really good position on the GC.”
Anger at Movistar though
Movistar however were angry, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the race now with the Sanish team no doubt having allies in the Spanish race. Eusebio Unzué said afterwards: “That’s one of those crashes that happen in cycling and I don’t think there wasn’t any intent but I think there were enough reasons to wait, because everyone could see the race leader crashing, six of his team-mates… There wasn’t nothing at stake because the stage victory was for the escapees, so that’s why I don’t understand why they were so cruel to profit from the leader’s crash.”
“I’m really disappointed with the attitude by the bunch and certain riders. I think that the correct thing was to wait, to respect the leader and because it has been done in similar situations in the past. I understand this is sport is cruel at times and some fair-play is missing. The team worked sensationally. They put their heart into bringing Alejandro back to the front, and he made a splendid climb as he lost less time at the finish”.
Juanjo Cobo (defending Tour of Spain champion): “I’m happy because I made it to the point where I thought I’d be. It was a less explosive finish than yesterday’s, a climb with a flat ending that didn’t allow to open any gaps, and even though I’m still thinking my condition is not the best, I’m getting better and better”.
“I was able to save this day and that’s important for me. Reaching this point was the idea I had before starting the Vuelta. I was afraid of the two opening summit finishes and even to the team time trial, where following my teammates was not easy. Getting through these first, important days with less than a minute’s loss leaves me satisfied and with strong moral for the remainder of the Vuelta. Many people was saying I was wasted, but I’m still confident about my chances. My condition keeps growing and I think I’ll end up, if not on the same condition as last year, at least with a level enough to keep up with the strongest guys.”
Bittersweet day for Astana
“It was a bittersweet day,†said Giuseppe Martinelli, Astana team manager. “We came close to the win with Bazayev, but unfortunately Kessiakoff did not manage to stay with the leading group. He has lost a lot of time, which hurts his aspirations for the general classification.
“We are still aiming to get one or more stage victories,†Martinelli continued. “We are using a strategy that I hope will bear fruit, and we were protagonists in the breakaways both yesterday and today. We will try to make sure that we are never caught off guard, we will continue to attack and, as always, we will give it our all to get a win.â€
