The Brit held firm and made his way into an elite group of favourites which formed over the top of the final first-category Col de Croix, chasing down rival Cadel Evans (BMC) in the final metres to maintain his 10-second lead. Wiggins was followed home by team-mate Chris Froome after a frenetic finish.

Team Sky were put under immense pressure during the stage but fought hard as strong contenders looked to power clear in the early going, with a breakaway always looking like a good bet to take victory.

That proved to be the case as up ahead Thibaut Pinot (FDJ-BigMat) held on after a superb performance in the mountains to claim the stage win by 26 seconds, roared on by team boss Marc Madiot in his team car.

Evans led a group of just 10 riders home at the line, holding off Tony Gallopin (RadioShack-Nissan) after the elite faction had formed over the top of the final ascent. Wiggins was the next man home while Froome’s performance saw him vault up to sixth overall on the GC.

Liquigas-Cannondale and then Lotto-Belisol pushed the pace late on after an energy-sapping stage which saw the peloton tackle no less than seven categorised climbs. Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) looked to put Wiggins under pressure on the descent but was reeled back on the run into Porrentruy.

Sean Yates, Team Sky Sports Director: “It was a tough day but in the end it all worked out. Whichever way it panned out it was always going to be hard, not just for us but for everyone else. You can see that by the damage done and the time gaps between the groups it was not an easy day.

“The boys coped well with the attacks early on. We knew it was going to be full gas from the start. Christian was great today along with Eddy. Brad and Froomey were up there at the end when it kicked off. There were only five or six guys together over the top of the final climb.

“Tomorrow is the race of truth and the truth will be told.”

Bradley Wiggins: On his first day wearing the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, Bradley Wiggins was subjected to some daunting attacks by the likes of Jurgen van den Broeck and Cadel Evans on the final descent but he reached the finish in the same group as the rider in second overall and will start the time trial of stage nine as the leader of the general classification.

“The plan was to try and let the right breakaway go and keep this jersey but it was a tough day and the team was fantastic. It’s always the same situation on a descent like that, Vincenzo [Nibali] is a fantastic descender and we knew he’d put us under pressure going into the finish but we were just trying to keep cool in those mountains.”

“It’s another day of the Tour ticked off and I’m really happy. The team was fantastic in the way that they were marshalling the race but it was a tough test. We saw on the last climb that there weren’t many guys – like yesterday – but now we can look forward to the time trial tomorrow.”

“I don’t know if [today’s chase of Evans in the finale] acts as a preview to what we can expect tomorrow; but it’s not a straight forward time trial – it’s quite technical in places and it’s going to be a good race.”

“I was trying to maintain as calm an approach as possible on the final climb. It was tough up there but it was like that for everyone. I was a bit surprised by the size of the group today at the top of the climb, I didn’t expect us to go as hard as we did but we were ready for it and it was good to be there with those guys at the end.”

“We’ll wait and see if I do gain ground on my competitors in the time trial; it’ll be a case of going out there and doing what we always do and stick to my race plan and stay focused on that – if that’s good enough, then I’ll hopefully take time on those guys. But it’s a tough one tomorrow and everyone has got to rise to the challenge, that’s for sure.”
