Giro: Stage 6 – All change at the top

Colombian rider Miguel Ángel Rubiano (Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela) claimed an impressive breakaway victory on the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia as the race hit the mountains.

The first climbs of this year’s Giro d’Italia have hinted at a race that will be even tougher than expected, with the battle for the Maglia Rosa looking like it will be more exciting and exhausting than ever before. Eventual stage winner Rubiano had gone away early in a large group including former Endura Racing rider Jack Bauer and whilst Bauer crashed descending the Capella, Rubiano left what remained of his fellow escapees behind on the brutal ramps of the third category Montegranaro climb, around 40 kilometres from home in the 210km route from Urbino.

He built on his advantage on the run to the finish at Porto Sant’Elpidio, comfortably holding off the four-man chase group to cross the line one minute and 10 seconds ahead of Adriano Malori (Lampre-ISD) and Michal Golas (Omega Pharma-QuickStep). The 12 seconds bonus for second place proved crucial for Italy’s Malori as it put him in the leader’s maglia rosa, 15 seconds in front of Golas, with Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) a further two seconds back.

Success for Omega Pharma – Quick-Step
Third on the stage and now up to second overall, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step’s Michal Golas was one of the riders who got in the break that made the 6th stage of the Giro d`Italia such a spectacle. Golas and 14 other riders escaped early from the bunch and built up a 9 minute lead. Several riders dropped out the lead group and eventually five riders battled for the stage win. Golas ended 3rd in the stage and is now 2nd in the overall rankings.

“The team rode really well today,” Sports Director Davide Bramati said. “The riders understood this morning that it was a stage where it was possible to fight for the win and for the pink jersey. We went into the race motivated and Golas chose the right breakaway. Michal did his best today.

We knew that we should have to attack Malori to take the jersey, but everybody was at the limit in the last kilometres. It was a really hard stage, it was really hot and the riders used a 28 sprocket on the steep climbs. In general the team was really strong. Cataldo had a flat tyre at about 50 km to go but Vermote and Maes gave their best to bring him in the peloton. Now we are second in the GC and second in the special classification for the white jersey. We will try again in the next stages.”

[pullquote]”The breakaway began after only 10 kilometers” Golas said. “This morning in the technical meeting we decided to attack immediately. The parcours was really really hard and in the front group, we lost some guys along the road. At the end there were only five of us.”[/pullquote]

“I knew that in the final it would have been a fight with Malori for the Pink Jersey. I tried to pull as much as I could. I tried to drop him but we were at the same level, there were no big difference between us. At 15km to go I had also a flat tire and I had to change the bike and chase the guys in front of me. I couldn’t do more than that really. After the race I was really disappointed. Now I’ve realized that I did a great race. I was so close to the pink jersey that I don’t want to give up. Tomorrow I will do my best to get another good result for me and for the team.”

Thor Hushovd Withdraws
BMC Racing Team’s Thor Hushovd withdrew from the Giro d’Italia Friday, citing fatigue that kept him from performing to his level of expectation in the opening week of the race. Hushovd stopped about 90 kilometers into the 210 km race that featured an 15-man breakaway from which solo stage winner Miguel Rubiano (Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela) and new race leader Adriano Malori (Lampre-ISD) emerged.

Marco Pinotti, best-placed for the BMC Racing Team in the general classification, climbed to 14th overall after finishing with a reduced peloton, 1:51 behind Rubiano. Hushovd had finished sixth on Stage 3 but lost more than nine minutes on Thursday’s Stage 5. Initially, the former world road champion thought the heat was to blame.

“Normally the first day in the heat, I suffer sometimes,” Hushovd said. “But today, straightaway I felt empty. I felt my body and and legs didn’t work”. [pullquote]”But today, straightaway I felt empty. I felt my body and and legs didn’t work[/pullquote]. “It’s not normal so I didn’t see any reason to push through. And I couldn’t because I had nothing to give.” Hushovd, who was making his first Giro appearance since 2007, said he has ridden a roller-coaster of emotion this season. “I was in good shape at Het Nieuwsblad and I thought from there on I would be good, because I knew I had worked hard during the winter,” he said.

“But then I got sick the first day in Paris-Nice, got good for the last two days, then got sick the day after. I came back to Paris-Roubaix and was quite good, but crashed out. So there’s been a lot of disappointments.” BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said the BMC Racing Team will miss Hushovd, but remains on target for its objectives. “I was convinced that he (Hushovd) could be better in the coming days, so we need to find out what’s wrong,” Baldato said.

“Pinotti is very strong and today I saw the guys were always all together – even Danilo Wyss – who isn’t necessarily suited for this kind of stage. So I am pleased that the team is riding strong.”

Good day for Astana too – Alexandr Dyachenko 4th on the stage
Astana had a major impact on the stage through the huge breakaway executed by Alexandr Dyachenko, which ended with the Astana man taking fourth place at the finish in Porto Sant’Elpidio.

“We wanted to get one of our guys in the day’s major breakaway,” said Giuseppe Martinelli, Astana Team Manager, “and we managed to make it happen through Dyachenko. This allowed us to ease off, letting the other teams take the strain of driving the peloton forward. The fourth place finish is without doubt a good result that keeps our confidence building with each passing day.”

“These medium-difficulty stages are harder than they look on paper. The severe heat and the climbs are certainly making themselves felt and it looks like it will be a tougher Giro than expected. Roman dealt nicely with these first climbs and was always towards the head of the peloton, ably supported by the team.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, team directeur sportif Alexandr Shefer gave us an insight into the Recanati–Rocca di Cambio stage: “Tomorrow will see the first uphill finish, which is not especially hard but will punish some riders anyway. Fewer than 30 riders will arrive together at the finish and Kreuziger has got to be one of them, so we will be riding exclusively for that result: if you want to be on the podium in Milan you cannot get dropped tomorrow. It is the first climber’s stage and we know that we have got a few riders we can rely on here.”
