With former Endura Racing rider Jack Bauer part of the Garmin team, they started well before Vande Velde had a moment through a corner and was a little gapped. The team had to wait and it took three kilometres before they were in full flight and at the first split we were up on Katusha. At the second split, they still led and as they turned onto the main road after the climb, the director sportifs knew their riders just had to maintain the speed to win. As fatigue set in, the formation got a big ragged over the final five kilometres but they kept the speed and held on to win and win well.

A kilometre and a half out, Navardauskas did a huge turn at the front and as he pulled off, Vande Velde lifted the pace. Into the final straight it was eyeballs out to the finish with Kiwi Bauer doing his final turn and coming off and Stetina losing contact in the last meters.

Team Sky meanwhile finished well down at 30 seconds with a time of 37 minutes and 34 seconds over the 33.2-kilometre course around Verona. In an impressive show of strength after his crash, it was Mark Cavendish who led the team into the final metres, returning to the race following his hard high speed crash during the sprint finish to Monday’s stage three. The result meant that Geraint Thomas slipped to seventh overall, 21 seconds behind new race leader Ramunas Navardauskas.

It was also a race to forget for BMC who’s race leader Taylor Phinney lost his Pink jersey. BMC set off last and before the departure, Taylor Phinney – pink jersey’s holder at that moment- knew it would be hard to keep the race lead considering the misfortune he had on stage 3, with a crash in the last 200 meters that cost him three stiches at the right ankle.

Eventually, BMC Racing Team finished in 10th position, 31 seconds behind stage winner Garmin Barracuda Team which includes new race leader Ramunas Navardauskas. Right after he crossed the finish line, Phinney thanked all his team mates for their help “I gave the maximum I had, but I had nothing to give. I am so thankful to my team mates because without their great help and strong support I’m not even sure I could have done it to the finish and I look forward to pay them back during the rest of the Giro”, Phinney said.

BMC Racing Team’s Assistant Sport Director Fabio Baldato said the team did a great job despite a mistake at a point during the second part of the trial “One of our guys went too fast into a bend while he was taking the relay and he cut straight in the grass, which has slowed down the pace and then they had a good reaction to wait each other and then, they made the fastest time in the third part of the trial” Baldato said.

Marco Pinotti, said he was impressed by the outcome of the day “In the end, we only lost 31 seconds, that’s great considering the bad condition of Taylor with his injury, I think with a good Phinney, we could have won today. The team is in strong condition so I’m confident for the rest of the race” said Pinotti.
