Third for Jon Tiernan-Locke of Endura Racing on stage 1 of the Tour of Murcia.

The UCI 2.1 race saw a break of nine riders get away including Zak Dempster of Endura Racing but a chase first by Rabobank to bring down the gap, and the start of the mountains saw the break split and Zak go back to the peloton after 170k.
Onto the final climb and the riders from the break were caught and first Stef Clement (Rabobank) went on the attack and then when he came back, Jon Tiernan-Locke pressed hard on the pedals again and made the rest dance to his tune as he took flight.
Quintana joined Locke who was in the leader’s white jersey for the UCI European Tour and the Columbian managed to dropped the winner of the Tour of the Med a kilometre from the top of the climb. Locke carried on chasing and on the descent was caught by the chasers and finished third behind Wout Poels in the sprint for second. More on this when we get details.
Jon told VeloUK afterwards, “I’m a bit gutted to be honest with third. With a couple of K’s to go, I thought I could win but the Movistar rider had sat on for 7k and I started to slow near the top in the headwind. I waited for the two behind thinking we’d work and get him back, but it was too technical. We tried though and finally Poels passed me in the sprint. Still, its a podium and I just hope I can recover to do a respectable TT tomorrow.”
