Day 2: 2012 London Track Cycling World Cup

World records, gold medals and 6,000 people going nuts anytime a GB rider stepped onto the track. Day 2 was one of the most exciting nights I have ever seen!

What you can say about a night when records tumbled and the crowd lifted the roof of the new velodrome. It was an amazing night and will be hard to match. Gold for Victoria Pendleton, Jess Varnish, Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell with all of them having a world record to their name made the evening simply one never to forget.

More later when we get time to write something! Reactions below from the Brits and well over 300 pics from the morning and evening sessions.

RIDER REACTIONS
Thanks to Paul Burgoine for the following:

Victoria Pendleton, Women’s Team Sprint (Great Britain)

When asked about the improvement in their time in relation to the mornings session Victoria said “well obviously we had a really great performance this morning setting a new National Record, and Jess and I were talking and saying this is the best form we have come to a competition in. So we were pleased weren’t we “(talking to Jess) “Very Pleased!”

“I can’t even explain to you how it feels to have a new World Record, the Australians had it for a while… then we took it back”. Did the fact the Australians broke the record spur you on? “Well absolutely because our times were so similar we were quite surprised and they were quite surprised, so it was anyone’s race, and we got it“.

Men’s Team Sprint (Great Britain)

Ross Edgar
Were you happy with the two rides Ross? “I would be lying if I said yes. I’ve done better than that so I know it’s in there. Hopefully in time I can bring my form back and press on.”

You must be happy to get a bronze medal though. “Absolutely and in front of the home crowd. We were only two tenths off the top ride tonight, all the teams are putting out their top guys and I think by the Worlds we should be right in the mix”.

Jason Kenny
Jason how did you feel about the two rides? “It was good – that’s the quickest time we have done in a long while; I think we have made a giant step forward. It’s great to be on the podium in front of the home crowd. It’s hard to tell if this is the fastest team we still have. Matt Crampton is sitting in the pits so it’s impossible to tell what will happen on the run up to the Games. I just need to concentrate on my own performance”.

Chris Hoy
Before anyone asked anything Chris said, the answers are – “Yes, no, yes, no, yes!”

What’s your verdict on the two rides? “I think it was solid bordering on pleasing. We had a few glitches in the final. I think though to be in striking distance of the top two nations is encouraging; this is our quickest ride since 2009 in the Team Sprint. We have had some pretty mediocre performances in the past few years, not all the time but in and out, and this result bodes well for the Worlds and the Olympics”

Women’s Team Pursuit (Great Britain)

Joanna Rowsell
Can you tell us about the ride? “We tried to go out a little bit steady, but the crowd are amazing and really get behind you so it’s difficult to reign it in – but we tried to keep it steady and back up that last kilo, and bring it home. I think we did that and we delivered and broke that World Record so we are over the moon”.

“We have been training over World record pace, so we knew it was in the tank. We were a little bit disappointed with our ride yesterday, because we knew we had more, and knew if we got it right tonight it would all come together, and it did…. it’s great to get that World Record back. I think yesterday the crowd really got behind us and we all got a bit over excited, but that’s why we are doing this test event to gain that experience now”

Dani King
Dani do you think you had a point to prove coming back into the team? “In a way yes. I knew I believed in myself and when last week I didn’t make selection, I had to keep my head screwed on and focus, I supported the girls as much as I could yesterday and when I got told this morning I was going into the team, I thought ‘yes,’ I can do this I can do the job well and I have. Tonight the other girls were amazing, and I have to thank the team for believing in me“.

Are you happier doing this rather than the Scratch race? “Yes a lot happier? I think this World record is going to be broken and the times will come tumbling down and tonight’s just proved that all the teams are stepping up, we can’t lose focus now. We need to go back and train harder and focus on the big goal.“

Laura Trott
How was your verdict on the ride? “I think we done pretty well to be honest … Jo took it out a lot steadier today which settled things down. Yesterday she came out like she was doing a 500m sprint and it’s like where do you go from there. Today, we came out a lot more steadier and picked it up from there and really brought it home, I think yesterday we all got a bit excited.“

Towards the end, you did a one and a half lap turn, why was that? “Yes, I did to just to keep the speed in there, I just wanted to keep the pace steady”.

Are you looking forward to the rest of the weekend? “Oh yes, I’m pretty excited to be racing again and now and looking forward to competing in the Omnium “

All the girls showed their support for Wendy Houvenaghel, who was replaced by Dani King and Jo Rowsell said, that this is very much a four women team and we may even use the four of us again in the Worlds.
