Result: Lars-Petter Nordhaug for Team Sky in Trofeo Deià

On the third day of the Challenge Mallorca as the race hit the mountains, Lars-Petter Nordhaug for Team Sky makes it a double for his team in the Trofeo Deià

It was Nordhaug’s first win in Sky colours. The foundations for the win were laid on the final climb, when the Norwegian attacked from what was left of a small selection at the front of the race.  It had been a tough day with no less than six second category climbs and there was no keeping the peloton together as breaks came and went in the race early on including one by Tour of Britain winner Lars Boom. Neo pro Luke Rowe of Wales managed to get into one of the moves, winning two mid race sprints at Binnisalem and Selva.

Into the second half of the stage though, the riders had to tackle well known Majorcan climbs such as Puig Major, the Coll de Soler and the Valldemossa and it was here the selection was made with Team Sky getting two in the move and a 1-3 result making it a very good day for the team on top of Cavendish’s win.

Nordhaug said afterwards: “I’ve been waiting for a victory for the team for a long time. I’ve been feeling strong in a lot of races but I’ve been training hard this winter. Bobby Julich took over as my personal coach in November and he has been doing a great job. I have a lot of self-confidence at the moment. And I felt great today.

“The riders around me were strong but I had super legs myself. I didn’t see any reason why I was not able to win. I was making the race for myself today. I was the first to attack on the Coll de Soller and then again on the second to last climb. On the last little climb when I saw those guys were standing still I just went as hard as I could to the finish.”

Team Sky’s director sportif Marcus Ljungqvist said on the Team Sky website afterwards “It kicked off from the gun with a five kilometre climb so it was full-on racing from the start. We had Alex and Luke looking at the early breaks and they did really good. Luke got into the break and took the sprints so he got onto the podium too.

“On the second to last climb, Lars-Petter attacked together with Henao and they went away in a group (of six). Tomorrow should be a similar hard day again with a more hectic finish possibly. They are going up Puig Major from the long side which will split the peloton up for sure.”

Neo pro Luke Rowe meanwhile said on Twitter … “three firsts today for me since I’ve been a pro. 1st time in a break, 1st time I won something (intermediate sprints)  & first time in a grupetto!”
