The Photo Album – Day 1 – More than 200 photos from the Vets & Youth Races

The first day of the British Cyclo-Cross Championships got underway in Chantry Park today with races from opposite ends of the age scale. Veteran and youth riders battled it out for the titles on offer in four sets of races held throughout the day.

The day began with the Over 50’s and this finished in the most dramatic fashion as Mick Bell and Steven Davies (defending champion) fell on the final corner with 100 metres to go. It wasn’t, as Mick explained afterwards, the way he expected the race to finish but the rider who has had to settle for so many second places behind Davies in the national trophy, still triumphed in the race that matters, the British title.

Over 50’s get the whistle to start their battle the titles on offer

These two have, through the winter, been locked in their own battle at the front of the Over 50 races and so it was today. Mick Rowson was the quickest off the line but Davies and Bell soon got to the front and then rode away from the rest. Behind, Mick Davies was chasing alone and behind him, Dave McMullen too was on his own as he led the race for the first over 60 rider. Those two held onto their positions behind Bell and Steven Davies to the finish.

Steven Davies and Mick Bell were neck and neck the whole race, even falling together on the final corner.

… and Mick Bell, who has been involved in cyclesport for a long time (10 years doing barriers for the Milk Race…) was really over the moon at winning the title.

Under 14 Boys
As expected, Hargroves Cycles rider Dan Tullett was a comfortable winner of the Under 14 boys race, leading from the start and winning alone as he has done so in the National Trophy. Behind Tullett, David Barnes had also shaken off his rivals for the silver medal while the battle for the bronze medal was won by Will Gascoyne ahead of Anthony Anderson.

Champion Dan Tullett gets congratulated by the boss, Peter Hargroves of Hargroves Cycles.

Under 14 Girls
Like Tullett in the boys race, pre-race favourite for the Girls, Charlotte Broughton, likewise was so dominant, the gap she opened up put her in a race and league of her own. Broughton led the race from the start and not only did she distance her female rivals, Charlotte was also soon passing the boys who had started ahead of her. Sophie Capewell and Jessica Roberts were the two riders battling for the Silver medals with Capewell winning the race to the finish by a few seconds over Roberts.

Under 16 Boys
Pre-race favourite after solo wins in the final few rounds of the National Trophy, Jack Ravenscroft again rode away from his rivals to win alone with the minor places settled in a big sprint from half a dozen or so of the riders in contention. It was James Shaw that got the Silver from Billy Harding.

Jack likes a good celebration and did just that winning the Under 16 title.

Under 16 Girls
Abby-Mae Parkinson gave the RST Clothing-Trigon bikes team another British championship in a 1-2 for the Midlands based squad.

Early on, Grace Garner and Parkinson had lead with Jessica Wilkinson chasing close behind but after pushing on over the hurdles, Parkinson found herself alone and while Garner watched Wilkinson, her teammate rode away to a title she says she didn’t expect to win.

Win she did though and her victory in Derby, shows how in her first cross season she is making rapid progress in the sport. Garner, one knee heavily strapped, finished second with Wilkinson in third.

Grace Garner (centre) and Abby Mae Parkinson (left) lead the race away.

Grace Garner, a knee heavily bandaged, leads eventual winner Abby-Mae Parkinson early in the Under 16 girls race.

Abby-Mae points to the sponsors, RST Clothing and Trigon Bikes, who she says have been a great help to her, as she crosses the line to win the Under 16 girls title.

Veteran Over 40
After a season where Darren Atkins has been showing good form with a number of solo victories, this time it was Jim Bryan who rode in alone to win the race in his first year in the veterans category. Attacking up a climb with everything he had,Bryan opened up a gap on Atkins after the two of them had ridden clear of another of the favourites, Noel Clough.

A huge field (over 90) started the Over 40 Men’s Cyclo-Cross championship. Here their race gets under way.

First lap and the string of riders stretches down one straight, round the bend and down another straight and further around the course.

With Atkins now distanced, Bryan found he was able to open up the gap further and he rode in alone for the title with Atkins too, clear of the chasers. The battled for third though was much closer. After Clough had challenged the leaders early on, he found himself caught by Young who had managed to extract himself from a chasing group.

Young then distanced Clough before the North East rider hit back and caught his teammate. Clough appeared to have the upper hand in the closing stages but Young, leading the over 45 category anyway, gave it everything he had to be the third rider in the race which he did, relegating Clough to fourth in the race and third in category (40+).

Jim Bryan wins the over 40’s race with not a rider to be seen behind him…
