Senior
It was a Belgian 1-2-3 in the Senior men event at the National Trophy in Southampton. In warm conditions for the time of year, Jelle Brackman, already a winner in the series, sprinted away from the start and the only person to challenge him was his countryman, Floris de Tier.
Under 23 Belgian, Floris de Tier, turns the gas on and blows his countryman Jelle Brackman, already a winner in the series off his wheel.
These two eventually hooked up and once they started to work together, they pulled away from the rest. Jody Crawforth tried to resist and with Xandro Meurisse, they chased the leaders but it wasn’t to be and while Meurisse continued a lone chase, Crawforth dropped back to his teammate from Hargroves Cycles, Steven James and series leader and British champion, Paul Oldham.
There was bad luck to come for James though as he destroyed a front wheel and spent over a lap running to the pits which took him out of the running for the race and the Under 23 jersey which was on his back today.
Crawforth and Oldham then spent lap after lap battling with each other while the Belgians ran away with the race. Eventually Oldham, who had back trouble during the week doing some home DIY, got clear of Crawforth and he took fourth to strengthen his lead while Crawforth was one place back in 5th.
The Battle for the Series was between these three, Steven James (Hargroves Cycles), Paul Oldham (Hope RT) and Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) with Oldham riding away to cross the line first Brit while James had wretched luck and finished well down.

Veterans 40+
The 40+ Veterans race that followed a two minute silence on the start line saw yellow jerseyed Jim Bryan get a good start with Darren Atkins close on his wheel and a group lead by Noel Clough chasing. While Atkins managed to dislodge Bryan, the three chasers caught the series leader for a shot while before he managed to go clear of them again. Atkins carried on to the finish alone as did Bryan with Clough also managing to secure third without having to sprint it out. Chris Young was fourth.
In the over 50’s series leader Mick Bell had a good start but it was national champion Steve Davies who put the power down and rode off into the distance to win the race comfortably. Bell meanwhile had a mechanical which saw him have to run a lot of the course and drop down the order. With Dave McMullen and Roy Hunt chasing and Ian Wright dropping back, Bell really went all out to catch the chasers and cross the line in third place and retain the jersey.

Juniors
In the Junior Race it was all Hugo Robinson who went clear early on and never looked like being caught. He was chased by Joe Moses and Alex Welburn and these two stayed together for a lot of the race before Moses put a dig inand gapped Welburn. While Robinson cruised to the finish to win the race, Moses kept the pressure on and held on to second place ahead of series leader Welburn.

Women
In the Women’s race, Claire Beaumont got a great start but it was soon the World Junior Road Race Champion Lucy Garner who managed to get to the front along with Hannah Payton and these two were then joined by series leader Adela Carter.
Garner, who explained after that she is enjoying the cross and its in no way a chore to do after a long season on the track and road. Carter, Garner, and Payton then continued to pull away from the rest and on the final lap, Garner, not leaving anything to chance, broke clear and crossed the line alone.
Carter too managed to get clear of British Junior Cyclo-Cross Champion Hannah Payton for second and to retain her series leaders yellow jersey with Payton in third.
