Chris Guy (Iceni Velo) wins the Velo Club Norwich Road Race at Wicklewood in Norfolk

Fergus Muir writes … Chris Guy of new Norwich club Iceni Velo won the VC Norwich Summer Road Race near Wymondham after sustaining a virtually race-long break with Mark Howard of PCH UK Racing Team.

The pair broke clear within minutes of the start and rode a 2-Up, between 30 and 90 seconds off the front of the bunch until the final climb when Howard faded.  Guy just hung onto take the win.  Hot on his heels, the bunch charge was headed by Lee Rowe (Finchley RT), just ahead of Matthew Thurston (Iceni Velo), Hugo Robinson (XRT/Elmy Cycles) and Mark Westrup (VC Baracchi)  The sprinting bunch encountered a car on the climb to the finish and several fell, but the first aiders could find no customers.

On a fine- dry and relatively windless morning there were several attempts to chip off the front of the bunch, but none lasted more than a few miles. Very few were dropped by the bunch and most of those that did succumbed to obvious causes – punctures, or in one case, a broken chain. Second placed Lee Rowe took the prize for Best Veteran while Best Fourth Cat was Steven Neill of King’s Lynn CC.  But Guy and his breakaway partner Howard – the latter finishing 19th and leaving with only Guy’s praise in his victory speech for reward – were the stars of the day.
