Colin Renton reports from the Meadowbank GP in Scotland where John Paul won the Sprint Grand Prix
Two new names were etched on the Meadowbank Grand Prix silverware as youth had its day in an engrossing programme of racing for the 40th anniversary staging of the meeting that was condensed into a single session after a washout on Saturday.
Teenager John Paul emerged as victor in the DHL international sprint with a confident performance that saw him oust Itmar Esteban in a tense finale. In blustery conditions, the Catalan – winner of the event in 2008 – posted the quickest time in qualifying when he clocked 11.39 seconds, with Paul, racing in the City of Edinburgh colours, two hundredths slower. Paul’s team mate Bruce Croall and Matt Rotherham (Science in Sport) completed the top four.
That quartet progressed through the first round of three-up contests, then were joined by Dutchman Hylke van Grieken and Barnaby Swinnerton (Science in Sport) who advanced via the repechages.
Esteban and Paul chalked up wins over Swinnerton and van Grieken respectively, while Rotherham got the better of Croall. A rep win for van Grieken booked a place in the semi finals where he went down 2-0 to Esteban, and Paul posted a similar result against Rotherham.
The opening leg of the final was tight, with Paul showing his guile to track Esteban before ducking below his opponent and pouncing off the final bend to take a narrow win. The second ride was even closer, with Esteban making a long run for home and Paul allowing him to open a gap of around three bike lengths at the bell before powering around the final circuit to snatch the win by a tyre’s width.
“It’s gone really well and I’m really happyâ€, said a delighted Paul, who was racing for the first time since the Good Friday meeting. “It was pretty cold and windy so my qualifying time wasn’t particularly fast. But once I had done that, I just put it behind me and focused on the racing.â€
And conceding that he had misjudged his opponent in the second leg of the final, he added, “I wasn’t really observant enough. I thought he might go and it was a long one. I think the wind helped me a bit in getting back.â€
The 18 year old, who raced for Scotland at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, has further representative action in his sights this summer.
“My main targets for the season are the Junior Europeans and the Junior World Championships and my ultimate goal for the season is to make it onto the Olympic Academy programme in Manchesterâ€, he explained.
If Paul’s mature performance was impressive, then the efforts of Ellie Coster (Bush Healthcare) were even more noteworthy. The 15 year old dominated proceedings in the women’s omnium, winning three of the four disciplines on the way to seeing off a strong field that included Commonwealth Games medallist Charline Joiner, who was competing on her home track.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Pancratz (Beeline Bicycles RT) landed the impressive Meadowbank Grand Prix trophy after he raced away in the latter stages of the 10 mile event. The German, who is a student at Bristol University, made his move with five laps to go and, with his rivals watching each other, quickly built a 30 metre lead which he still held at the bell. And, although the pursuers narrowed the gap over the final circuit, Pancratz held on to clinch the victory from John McClelland (Agiskoviner) and Dave Martin (Bicycleworks).
It was a fruitful trip north for McClelland, who also chalked up a win in the derny paced event, staging a late charge that took him past his team mate Alex Wyse.
Other winners on a day of tight finishes were Croall, in the 8 kilometre scratch, Scott McRae (Leslie Bike Shop), who bagged top spot in the 8 kilometre points race from James Notley (Planet X) and Greg Brown (Dooleys RT), winner earlier in the afternoon of a gruelling elimination race featuring 24 starters, while Pete Cullen (Stirling BC) led from the gun as he prevailed in the 500 metres handicap.
