Rob Pears wins Hemel Hempstead CC 10 mile time trial by 3 seconds from Matt Clinton while Matt Bottrill punctures & crashes

The events started off with a heavy shower for the first 30-50 riders but it dried out afterwards. However it was very windy with it being a bit too much in the west for it to be really fast. Despite that a good number of people did PB’s (34 approx). A few decided not to start when it was raining or due to the strong winds.

A few people managed to puncture due to potholes on the course. Favourate Matt Bottrill also punctured – and then crashed – after hitting a pothole, but not in the first few miles where it might be expected with the poorer surface there, but later after the big descent and smoother roads, misjudging a manhole cover that seemed to be sunken.

On Facebook, Matt explains what happened … “regarding crashing in the Hemel Hempstead 10, I’m doing ok. I’ve just taken a lot of skin off my right hand side and I’m a bit bruised and battered. I basically hit a pot hole at 34mph and blew both tubs out, which caused me to crash. Luckily, Sean Yates, picked me up within seconds of it happening, but surreal! He’s such a top bloke. And its not every day you get picked by a guy that’s worn the yellow jersey in the Tour!”

“Fingers crossed I can recover, for the British time championships in Glasgow and the men’s national 50, but will have to see how the next few days go. I’m made of hard stuff, so want to be there. But at this moment I’m just glad to come home in one piece and celebrate, fathers day.”
